Power Requirements for Your GPU

The tabs above show the power requirements for the Nvidia and AMD Graphics cards. The following graphics cards have been given a minimum watts and amps rating based on a standard build that does not include; overclocking, water-cooling or multiple PSU’s. In addition, a list of the type and number of pin connectors that are needed for each GPU – double check the specifications for a particular model, as some graphic card manufacturers will make changes to the reference design.

The required amps are calculated using the Maximum Combined Wattage across the +12V rail(s) of a Multi or Single rail PSU – for instance, a 650W PSU has a Maximum Combined Wattage of 612W on its +12v rail(s), divide that number by 12 to get the amperage of the Power Supply Unit.

612w / 12 = 51A

It does not matter if the PSU is multi-rail or single-rail, the same calculation is always used – for instance, the Antec TP-650C is a 650W PSU and has 2 +12V rails (+12V1 and +12V2), with a Maximum Combined Wattage of 648W, so the total amps are 54A. Don’t worry if it is Single or Multi rail design, it will always function the same, all modern power supply units will make sure your components have plenty of power – if the PSU is tripping, then you are asking for too much power from a insufficient power supply.

Note: Always buy your PSU from a reputable brand that states things like Maximum Combined Wattage, 80+ Rating, Amps on the +12V rails, over current protection, if they are being ambiguous with any detail, then pick a different manufacturer  – Notable brands include; Corsair, Cooler Master, XFX, Antec, be quiet!, Fractal Design, Zalman, Silverstone, to name a few.
